Heavy rain and flooding in north-central Japan strands people and vehicles

PUBLISHED Aug 27, 2026, 12:01 PM ET

Torrential rain struck Japan’s north-central prefectures of Ishikawa and Toyama, triggering severe flooding and landslides that closed roads and stranded residents. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a Level 5 heavy rain warning, urging precautionary measures before downgrading it to medium as rain subsided. Officials advised over 380,000 people to seek shelter on safer ground as multiple rivers overflowed. Emergency workers rescued stranded residents in Himi city using rubber boats in knee-high waters, while abandoned vehicles stalled on flooded roadways. In neighboring Ishikawa prefecture, flooding isolated 270 homes across three municipalities. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara confirmed that despite widespread property flooding and landslides, no injuries were reported among the affected residents. The meteorological agency cautioned that additional rainfall and landslide risks could persist through Friday morning, predicting up to twenty centimeters of precipitation in vulnerable areas.
