New Wildfire Erupts on California's Big Sur Coast Amidst Escalating Emergency

A new wildfire named the Plaskett Fire erupted Wednesday morning along California's Big Sur coast in Los Padres National Forest, rapidly expanding to 50 acres. The blaze compounds an ongoing emergency as crews battle the separate, 17,817-acre Timber Fire burning thirty miles to the north. Officials deployed heavy aerial resources, including five air tankers and three helicopters, while requesting smokejumpers to tackle the remote terrain. The Timber Fire escalated overnight, growing by nearly two thousand acres and reducing containment to twenty-three percent. Consequently, Monterey County authorities expanded evacuation orders to eleven zones and warnings to twenty-two zones. Both fires threaten critical regional infrastructure, local communities, and major transportation corridors amidst severe dry conditions. The cause of the Plaskett Fire remains under active investigation by state forestry officials.
