Tereos sees EU sugar output falling to 38-year low as severe weather hits beet crops

French sugar maker Tereos announced that extreme summer heat and drought will reduce its growers sugar beet yields by more than twenty percent compared to last year. The weather crisis contributes to an anticipated thirty eight year low for total European Union sugar output. Tereos expects beet yields to fall roughly fifteen percent below the five year average. In response, the company plans to shorten its processing campaign at eight French factories to an average of one hundred days down from one hundred thirty days last year. The campaign start will also be delayed to allow crops potential recovery time. Commercial Director Pierre-Henri Dietz stated that rising sales prices following two years of decline are helping the sector return toward balanced performance. Joint warnings from French producers indicate that pest and disease pressures have exacerbated the weather impacts on regional agricultural yields across Europe.
