Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, the Nicaraguan father of a U.S. Navy sailor aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, has been released from immigration detention, his family said Tuesday. Aviles was arrested by Border Patrol agents during a vehicle stop in Key West, Florida, on Saturday, according to the Department of Homeland Security. DHS said he had entered the United States illegally and would remain in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody pending removal proceedings. His son, Joshua Aviles, disclosed the arrest in a Facebook post while deployed at sea, saying his father had a driver’s license, Social Security card and work permit and was awaiting a green card. The family announced the release Tuesday but provided no explanation. An immigration judge dismissed Aviles’ case Monday, according to Department of Justice records cited by the Associated Press. DHS and ICE did not immediately explain the change. The carrier has begun its journey home.
