Nevada Sues Federal Government Over Colorado River Water Cuts

Nevada filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Reclamation over a newly enacted two-year water allocation framework for the Colorado River. Announced on August 24 by Governor Joe Lombardo, the legal action claims the framework disproportionately penalizes lower-basin states while exempting upper-basin states from mandatory cuts. The river, which supplies approximately forty million residents and extensive agricultural acreage across the American Southwest, faces severe depletion driven by prolonged drought conditions and high temperatures. Lake Mead and Lake Powell have dropped to historic lows, with current river flows dropping to roughly thirty-seven percent of the historical average. Lower-basin states, including California and Arizona, face immediate reduction pressures, while upper-basin jurisdictions maintain current usage levels. Legal analysts warn that expanding inter-state litigation could ultimately reach the United States Supreme Court, threatening a century-old interstate compact governing water distribution across the region.
