Florida Reports First Locally Acquired Dengue Cases in Multiple Counties

PUBLISHED Aug 25, 2026, 10:05 AM ET

The Florida Department of Health confirmed that 23 locally acquired cases of dengue fever have been identified in the state in 2026. Health officials announced the first local transmission case in Citrus County, located about an hour north of Tampa, marking the northernmost infection reported in the state this year. Recent surveillance reports indicate a rapid surge in transmission, with 16 cases recorded during a single week in mid-August. Most of the total cases are concentrated in the Tampa Bay area, including 15 cases in Hillsborough County and three in Pinellas County. Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties have also reported local transmissions. Local acquisition indicates that native mosquito populations are actively transmitting the virus within communities rather than among international travelers. In response, local vector control authorities have deployed targeted aerial larviciding, truck fogging, and ground inspections to eliminate standing water habitats and reduce mosquito breeding.
