Average global sea surface temperatures have reached an unprecedented 21.1 degrees Celsius, or nearly 70 degrees Fahrenheit, marking a historic high not seen in modern observational records. The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirm these sustained anomalies. Approximately 42 percent of the world's oceans are currently experiencing marine heat wave conditions. Scientists attribute this severe thermal stress to the combined effects of long-term anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and a naturally occurring El Niño climate pattern. The oceans act as the planet's primary thermal sink, absorbing over 90 percent of excess heat from fossil fuel combustion. This persistent heating significantly weakens their carbon-absorbing capacity. Furthermore, the elevated temperatures threaten marine ecosystems, supercharge coastal storms, and accelerate sea level rise through thermal expansion, prompting severe warnings regarding future disruptions to global weather systems and commercial fisheries, thereby posing immediate economic and environmental risks nationwide.
