FreightWaves reported Aug. 19 that 7,058 jobs were affected by announced layoffs, closures and consolidations involving 21 companies across more than 15 states. Tyson Foods accounted for more than 3,000 positions as it closed its Joslin, Illinois, beef facility and Eagle Mountain, Utah, case-ready operation, while pursuing a sale of its Pasco, Washington, plant. Tyson attributed the restructuring to a historic cattle shortage and said beef operations would be concentrated in Nebraska, Kansas and Texas. Essendant accounted for 1,278 positions across six states, according to WARN notices, with reductions scheduled mainly for Oct. 3 while the distributor seeks capital or a buyer. Other affected employers include FedEx, Ryder, Daimler Truck, HelloFresh, Carlex Glass and Mission Foods. The figures represent jobs affected, not necessarily completed layoffs. The evidence supports a broad wave of supply-chain restructuring, but does not establish a nationwide supply-chain collapse or one common economic cause for every reduction.
