Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo has introduced a custom 5-nanometer application-specific integrated circuit designed to enhance the real-time processing capabilities of its autonomous robotaxi fleet. Manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the specialized chip delivers over 1,000 trillions of operations per second, matching the performance metrics of leading autonomous driving systems offered by third-party suppliers like Nvidia. Deployed in Waymo’s latest sixth-generation vehicles, the custom silicon handles intensive front-end tasks, including raw camera, lidar, and radar data fusion, spatial perception, and neural network inference before the primary computing stack executes navigation decisions. While Waymo continues to utilize components from external partners such as AMD, Micron, and Samsung, this strategic shift toward proprietary hardware aims to reduce long-term infrastructure costs, boost operational efficiency, and optimize reflex speeds in complex urban markets like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Atlanta.
