House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and outside adviser, held a private meeting in New York, according to people familiar with the discussion. The New York Times reported Sunday that five sources described the encounter, which covered housing, immigration and the cost of living as possible areas for cooperation. Kushner also suggested Jeffries meet White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, according to two people cited in the report. Neither Kushner nor Jeffries publicly confirmed the meeting, while Jeffries said Democrats would continue seeking action on affordability. The meeting comes as Democrats seek House control in November and Republicans defend congressional majorities. Trump has publicly criticized Jeffries but recently called him a nice guy. The supplied story also links the meeting to the Iran crisis. That connection is not established by reporting. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent separately announced plans for severe new Iran sanctions.
