Officials Warn Wildland Firefighters Over Risks of Contaminated Supplements Used for Toxic Smoke Exposure

PUBLISHED Aug 23, 2026, 12:29 AM ET

Fire and medical authorities have issued urgent safety warnings regarding unverified glutathione supplements administered to wildland firefighters battling toxic smoke. Marketed by alternative health groups during major Western blazes, including recent fires in Spokane and Los Angeles, the antioxidant is delivered via intravenous infusions or nebulizers. Experts caution that clinical evidence proving its safety or efficacy for smoke detoxification is entirely lacking. Furthermore, nebulized glutathione can dangerously constrict airways in individuals with chronic respiratory conditions. Compounding the risk, the federal food and drug administration reported that multiple compounding pharmacies voluntarily recalled batches of injectable glutathione vials in August following the discovery of elevated bacterial endotoxin levels. Contaminated product exposure can trigger severe adverse reactions, including high fevers, low blood pressure, shock, and fatal infections. Labor organizations like the international association of firefighters urge frontline personnel to reject unapproved substances and rely exclusively on certified protective equipment during active wildfire operations.
