The Mukluk Fire near Tok, Alaska, has burned 7,287 acres and reached 22% containment as firefighters focus on protecting homes and extinguishing hotspots, the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection said Saturday. The fire began Aug. 17 near a home along the Alaska Highway and was attributed by state officials to a downed power line. At least 20 structures have been damaged or destroyed, according to state fire officials and local reporting. Evacuation restrictions have been reduced from their initial footprint, but some Level 3 GO areas remain, while residents face lower-level warnings. Cooler, wetter weather has moderated fire behavior, although dry duff, power infrastructure and fire-weakened trees continue to pose hazards. Crews from Alaska and Yukon, Canada, are strengthening containment lines and protecting structures. State authorities have activated disaster assistance for affected residents. The fire remains active, and officials warn sunnier conditions could increase smoke and flare-up activity.
