U.S. gross federal debt surpassed $40 trillion on August 18, reaching about $40.047 trillion, Treasury data showed, marking the first time the balance crossed the threshold. Reuters reported the milestone on August 19, while Associated Press coverage noted the debt had risen from $39 trillion in March and $38 trillion in October. Long-term Treasury yields also climbed sharply, with the 30-year yield reaching above 5.3%, amid concerns about inflation, oil prices, government borrowing and fiscal sustainability. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department would increase selected long-duration bond buybacks to at least $4 billion per operation. U.S. stocks fell on August 20, with the Dow dropping 703.84 points, the S&P 500 declining 0.87% and Nasdaq falling 1%. Walmart shares dropped 9.15% after weaker sales growth. The debt milestone heightened fiscal concerns, but available evidence does not establish it alone caused the market sell-off. Oil and geopolitical tensions also pressured markets.
