College Football Eligibility Chaos: Players May Exit NFL for College

PUBLISHED Aug 21, 2026, 8:04 PM ET

A federal appeals court has temporarily halted a lower court ruling that would have granted thousands of college athletes an extra season of eligibility. The U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a two-to-one decision pausing an injunction from a Colorado district court that favored players from the high school class of 2022. This legal dispute follows the NCAA’s recent adoption of an age-based model allowing five seasons within five years. While the federal stay deals a blow to athletes seeking immediate reinstatement, separate state-level legal battles continue. A Louisiana state court recently issued a temporary restraining order allowing sixteen football players, including several rookies currently in NFL training camps, to potentially return to college rosters if they terminate their professional contracts. The NCAA strongly opposes these rulings, arguing they destabilize roster construction and harm incoming freshmen. The conflicting judicial decisions have created widespread uncertainty just weeks before the start of the 2026-27 college football season.
