A federal judge in New York has struck down the Trump administration directive suspending immigrant visa processing for nationals from seventy five countries. United States District Judge Jeannette Vargas ruled that the indefinite freeze violated federal immigration law and exceeded statutory authority. The policy, initiated in January, blocked applications under the rationale that applicants might become public charges dependent on government benefits. Plaintiffs, including nonprofit organizations and affected families, argued the nationality based blanket ban infringed on antidiscrimination protections and stripped consular officers of their mandated individual evaluation authority. Judge Vargas ordered the resumption of fair case by case adjudications. The State Department defended the screening standards as necessary to protect public resources. While legal experts anticipate an administration appeal, immigration advocates celebrated the judicial setback against sweeping executive restrictions affecting individuals across multiple global regions seeking lawful permanent residency in the United States jurisdiction starting this very Friday afternoon.
