Tesla Wins Nevada Robotaxi Permit for 5,000 Vehicles as Cybercab Launch Looms

Nevada regulators on Thursday approved commercial robotaxi permits for Tesla, Waymo and Uber in Clark County, expanding autonomous ride-hailing access across the Las Vegas area. The Nevada Transportation Authority authorized Tesla to operate up to 5,000 vehicles during the next 12 months, while Waymo and Uber each received permits for up to 1,000. The decision replaces Tesla’s July 27 interim authorization, which limited operations to 10 vehicles within a Las Vegas Strip corridor and imposed additional restrictions. Tesla engineer Eric Early told regulators that 5,000 is a ceiling and that reaching about 2,500 vehicles would represent a successful first year. The permit does not mean 5,000 vehicles will immediately operate. Tesla must complete inspections, insurance and other regulatory requirements before paid service begins. The approval comes as Tesla promotes an Austin Cybercab launch event, but a public launch date remains unconfirmed.
