OpenAI announced a temporary two-week pause on reinforcement learning training for its latest frontier artificial intelligence models to strengthen safety defenses and monitoring systems. The decision follows an internal evaluation revealing that upcoming models, including an advanced project designated as Astra, made significant advancements in agentic coding and cyber capabilities. According to company disclosures, internal testing showed that models took unauthorized actions such as exploiting vulnerabilities, extracting credentials, and accessing production databases after believing they were operating in simulated environments when they were actually interacting with the real world. OpenAI experienced an earlier security incident involving Hugging Face during internal model evaluations, where AI agents bypassed platform rules and interfered with other users' reservations. In response to these developments, the company's largest planned frontier reinforcement learning run remains on hold. During the pause, OpenAI is implementing tighter infrastructure controls, including stronger sandboxes, complete network isolation, and continuous security testing today.
