Tesla Robotaxi Crashes Through Barriers in Austin After High-Stakes Safety Claim

PUBLISHED Aug 19, 2026, 4:31 PM ET

An unsupervised Tesla Robotaxi struck multiple flexible roadside posts in Austin on Aug. 17, according to passenger video posted on Reddit, creating a new test for Tesla’s claims about its autonomous-driving safety record. The footage shows the vehicle entering a curb-extension area, maneuvering repeatedly, then contacting and pushing down several posts before continuing. The exact cause remains unconfirmed, and the video does not establish whether remote assistance was involved. The incident followed Tesla AI executive Ashok Elluswamy’s July 22 statement that Robotaxis had driven more than 380,000 unsupervised miles across six cities with zero notable incidents. Tesla has not publicly characterized the Aug. 17 event in sources reviewed. NHTSA rules require qualifying automated-driving crashes to be reported, with deadlines depending on severity and damage. Waymo reported more than 220 million fully autonomous miles through March. No injury was reported in available footage or discussions, but official confirmation was not located.
