ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen died Tuesday at 93 from complications of Parkinson’s disease, the network announced, prompting tributes and an awkward live television transition. Rasmussen, who conceived ESPN with his son Scott in 1978, helped launch the network on Sept. 7, 1979, creating the first 24-hour sports television network. During Tuesday’s First Take, host Courtney Cronin and panelists discussed Rasmussen’s legacy before a tribute graphic appeared. The segment was cut off around noon Eastern as The Pat McAfee Show began, producing an abrupt handoff that drew criticism across social media. ESPN’s Watch platform preserves a two-minute tribute segment, confirming the network aired dedicated recognition. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro praised Rasmussen as a visionary and innovator, while veteran broadcaster Chris Berman also honored him. McAfee said Wednesday that the transition resulted from normal programming timing rather than an intentional interruption. The episode has become a broader discussion about ESPN’s programming culture.
