Hawaii Braces as Hurricane Lala Threatens Remote Atolls

Hurricane Lala strengthened to Category 4 intensity Wednesday as it moved toward the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, prompting hurricane warnings across part of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. The National Hurricane Center said Lala had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, up from 125 mph in Tuesday evening’s advisory, while the storm continued west-northwest. A hurricane warning covers Lisianski Island through Maro Reef, with a tropical storm warning extending eastward to French Frigate Shoals. Large surf was expected to begin affecting the monument Wednesday, with possible inundation of low-lying atolls. The storm passed near Hawaii’s Big Island without making landfall, producing flooding, infrastructure damage and widespread power outages before weakening to a tropical storm and later rapidly re-intensifying. Associated Press reported that recovery efforts continued on the islands as Lala moved west. Forecast uncertainty remains centered on the timing of Lala’s expected northward turn and subsequent weakening, according to federal forecasters.
