Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm Sunday after skirting Hawaii’s Big Island as a Category 1 hurricane, but dangerous flooding, damaging winds and widespread outages continued across Hawaii. The National Hurricane Center said Lala’s maximum sustained winds reached 75 mph Saturday before weakening. The storm passed south of the Big Island without making landfall, while rainfall approached 35 inches in some areas and wind gusts exceeded 100 mph at higher elevations, according to National Weather Service and Associated Press reporting. More than 200,000 customers temporarily lost electricity, although outages fell sharply Sunday. Airports and commercial ports closed temporarily. Authorities continued flood warnings as Lala moved westward.
