Tropical Storm Lala was strengthening toward hurricane status Friday as it approached Hawaii, prompting a hurricane warning for Hawaii County and tropical-storm warnings elsewhere. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Lala had 60 mph sustained winds and was about 420 miles east-southeast of Hilo at 5 a.m. HST Friday, moving west-northwest at 12 mph. Forecasters expected hurricane conditions on Hawaii Island Saturday, with rainfall of 8 to 12 inches, locally up to 25 inches, and potentially life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Hawaii County officials also warned of 1 to 3 feet of storm-surge flooding, dangerous surf, possible tornadoes, damaging winds and power disruptions. Dry leeward areas faced elevated fire weather before rain arrived. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green declared an emergency Thursday, while county officials activated emergency measures. The Canadian government advised against non-essential travel to Hawaii County. The storm remained a forecast event, with impacts subject to change as conditions evolved.
