Indiana Flood Emergency: Governor Requests Federal Help

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has requested federal emergency assistance from Washington after severe storms and flooding caused deaths, rescues, power outages and damage across the state. Braun’s request, reported Friday, August 14, follows Executive Order 26-15, which declared a disaster emergency across numerous Indiana counties because of flooding, severe weather, tornado activity and a derecho. Officials have mobilized the National Guard, while crews continue rescue and recovery operations. The White River at Anderson reportedly reached a record level exceeding the previous 1913 flood record, underscoring the severity of the flooding. A 19-year-old, Matthew Morey, remained missing after entering the Mississinewa River in Delaware County, according to reporting. More than 200,000 Indiana utility customers lost power during the storm outbreak, while outages also affected Illinois and Ohio. The federal request does not mean assistance has been approved; a declaration remains a separate decision. Statewide flood threats and recovery operations remain ongoing.
