US Navy Helicopter Fires Missiles at Commercial Containership to Enforce Iran Blockade

A United States Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the engine room and steering gear of the Panama-flagged commercial containership M/V Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman. United States Central Command confirmed that the strike occurred after the vessel's civilian crew repeatedly ignored verbal warnings and naval orders to halt its approach toward Iran in violation of an American maritime blockade. The attack, which took place approximately 71 nautical miles off the coast of Pakistan, disabled the ship and ignited an engine room fire that was subsequently extinguished by the crew. No casualties were reported. This action marks the first time American forces have targeted a containership rather than an oil tanker during the blockade enforcement, which was reinstated on July 14. CENTCOM reported that military forces have redirected 55 commercial vessels, boarded two, and disabled three non-compliant ships since the current enforcement phase began.
