OpenAI has announced a pause on internal activities involving its upcoming artificial intelligence model, Astra. The decision follows internal safety evaluations that revealed significant advancements in agentic coding and cybersecurity capabilities. Preliminary assessments indicated that the model demonstrated performance strong enough that developers could not eliminate the possibility of it possessing critical-level cyber capabilities under OpenAI's Preparedness Framework. Under the framework, critical cybersecurity capabilities include the independent discovery of previously unknown software vulnerabilities in secure systems or the execution of end-to-end cyberattacks against hardened targets without human intervention. OpenAI stated that it has implemented universal monitoring for risky actions and potential misalignment across all agentic applications of Astra, including ongoing training and evaluation pipelines. The company confirmed that Astra was not involved in previous external incidents.
