The United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service issued an emergency public health alert regarding meat and poultry products containing fresh jalapeño peppers that may be contaminated with Salmonella Javiana. The public health action follows an ongoing nationwide food contamination investigation conducted jointly by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Federal health officials confirmed that 345 individuals across 27 states have fallen ill from the outbreak strain. To date, 36 hospitalizations have been documented, with no reported fatalities. Epidemiological data indicates that illness onset dates range between June 19, 2026, and July 20, 2026. Among 191 infected individuals interviewed by public health investigators, 177 people, representing 93 percent, reported dining at Mexican-style restaurants shortly before developing symptoms. FDA traceback analysis traced the source of the contaminated peppers to a agricultural grower located in Sinaloa, Mexico, who supplied produce to Coast Citrus Distributors. Coast Citrus Distributors distributed the fresh jalapeños to commercial wholesalers, food-service operations, and restaurant chains nationwide. Following FDA recommendations, Coast Citrus Distributors agreed to recall all remaining inventory and suspended all further imports from the Sinaloa producer. Major restaurant entities were impacted by the contaminated supply. Both Chipotle and QDOBA confirmed receiving shipments originating from the implicated grower through Coast Citrus Distributors. Chipotle transitioned to alternative regional suppliers for affected store locations beginning July 20, 2026. QDOBA removed fresh jalapeños from all store menu preparations nationwide starting July 28, 2026. The Food Safety and Inspection Service warned that processed meat and poultry items containing the recalled jalapeños remain in commercial circulation and inside consumer refrigerators or freezers. While no confirmed illnesses have been attributed directly to FSIS-regulated meat and poultry products as of August 9, 2026, regulators warned that additional downstream consumer items will be added to the public advisory list as supply-chain tracing progresses. Salmonella infection produces salmonellosis, causing severe diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and high fever starting within six hours to six days post-ingestion. Symptoms typically persist four to seven days, but severe cases require immediate medical hospitalization, particularly among young children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Federal agencies strongly advise consumers to inspect household food storage, refrain from consuming covered items, and immediately throw away or return affected products to retailers. Retailers and food-service establishments are ordered not to sell or serve any product linked to the recalled supply. Agencies also directed commercial facilities to perform rigorous sanitization of all food preparation surfaces, storage containers, and utensils to prevent secondary cross-contamination
