Washington Declares First-Ever 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' as Wildfires Explode

The National Weather Service has issued a first-ever “particularly dangerous situation” warning for extreme fire weather across Eastern Washington. The alert is categorized one level above a standard red flag warning. The warning applies to Spokane, the Waterville Plateau, the Okanogan Valley, the Western Columbia Basin, the Colville Reservation, the Palouse, and the Snake River areas. The Washington National Guard has mobilized to support ongoing firefighting operations. More than 1,000 fires have ignited in Washington this year, burning approximately 425,000 acres. As of Friday, ten large wildland fires were actively burning, consuming a combined 200,000 acres across the state. The Modrite fire, located on the Colville Reservation, expanded by 17,500 acres between Thursday and Friday. The fire's total footprint now exceeds 37,000 acres. Fire containment dropped from 63 percent to 30 percent over the same period. Currently, 639 personnel are assigned to the incident. Weather conditions threaten to push the fire north toward the town of Inchelium. Level 3 "go now" evacuation orders are in effect for Inchelium and surrounding areas, including Lynx Mountain, Rainy Ridge, Spud Cellar Road, Round Lake, Twin Lakes, Box Canyon, Stranger Mountain, Covada, Kewa, Apex, and Rodgers Bar. The Colville Tribal Broadcast System advised all reservation residents to prepare for further evacuation directives. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized federal funds to assist with firefighting costs. Vincent Maykovich, a FEMA administrator, stated that the threats posed by the Modrite fire could constitute a major disaster. Threatened structures in Inchelium include homes, a community center, tribal emergency medical services facilities, fire and rescue buildings, a library, a childcare center, and a wood treatment plant.
