Chinese artificial intelligence firm Moonshot established a computing agreement with Alibaba Group for the operation of approximately 20,000 Nvidia chips, according to a report published by Bloomberg News on Friday, July 31, 2026. Alibaba, functioning as one of Moonshot's primary institutional investors, mandates that portfolio companies utilize its enterprise cloud infrastructure. The Nvidia hardware cluster provided by Alibaba forms a core component of the computational power driving Moonshot's Kimi AI architecture. Earlier in July, Moonshot introduced Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter system promoted as the largest open-weight artificial intelligence model globally, delivering performance benchmarks close to frontier U.S. models. Strict United States export controls targeting advanced semiconductors have made hardware acquisition a primary operational constraint for Chinese technology developers. Industry reports indicate that Moonshot has sought access to advanced Nvidia processors through regional networks in Southeast Asia to support the training of future artificial intelligence iterations. An Alibaba spokesperson issued an emailed statement to Reuters describing the reported supply of H200 chips to Moonshot as entirely groundless. Representatives for the White House, the U.S. Commerce Department, and Nvidia did not immediately provide comment. The disclosure coincides with intensifying regulatory scrutiny from Washington. White House officials previously stated that the federal government possesses intelligence suggesting Moonshot engaged in large-scale model distillation against U.S. architectures during the development of Kimi K3. Investigations and policy discussions regarding trade compliance, export enforcement, and semiconductor access remain ongoing across federal agencies.
