Chemical Reaction Forces Evacuations in Huntington Beach Industrial Park

PUBLISHED Jul 29, 2026, 9:43 PM ET

A hazardous materials incident forced evacuations in an industrial area of Huntington Beach, California, on Wednesday after a chemical reaction caused a 55-gallon drum to heat up. The Huntington Beach Fire Department responded to the incident in the 15200 block of News Boy Circle shortly before 10:30 a.m. local time. Officials said a chemical was accidentally mixed with another substance inside the drum, triggering an exothermic reaction that caused the container to self-heat. Hazmat crews and firefighters were dispatched to the scene to identify the substances involved and develop a plan to safely resolve the situation. The immediate area was evacuated as a precaution, though authorities did not specify how many businesses were affected. A nearby street was shut down. Aerial footage from Sky5 showed emergency crews gathered outside TS Conductor on News Boy Circle. The Orange County Fire Authority was also involved in monitoring the situation. Despite the evacuations, the Huntington Beach Fire Department stated it did not anticipate any threat to life or property. Officials said further updates would be provided as more information became available. The incident comes weeks after a separate chemical leak in Orange County prompted a larger evacuation and a state of emergency declaration. In that earlier event, more than 50,000 people were evacuated from their homes due to a leaking toxic chemical tank at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove. As of Wednesday afternoon, crews remained on scene assessing the situation and drawing up a response plan. It remained unclear whether anyone had been injured or taken to hospital. The hazardous chemical mix prompted a rapid response from multiple agencies, including hazardous materials specialists. Authorities confirmed there was no active leak from the Huntington Beach incident. The investigation into the exact chemicals involved and the cause of the accidental mixing was ongoing.
