Dominica sperm whales alter clicks near boats

Dominica – Researchers off the Caribbean island of Dominica have discovered that sperm whales modify their characteristic clicking patterns when boats are nearby. Scientists from Project CETI (the Cetacean Translation Initiative), a non-profit research organisation, analysed extensive underwater acoustic recordings collected in waters frequented by both whales and vessels. They found that the mammals produce a specific, repeatable pattern of audible clicks when they detect the noise of marine traffic in their environment, indicating a clear shift in their usual vocal behaviour in the presence of boats. The research team reported that this altered click pattern is so distinct and consistent that they can now use it to identify, from sound recordings alone, when ships are close to the whales. The finding provides a new method to monitor whale–vessel interactions by relying on the animals’ own acoustic responses to passing boats. Scientists say the pattern can serve as an indicator of nearby marine traffic, offering a practical tool to help track human activity around sperm whale habitats and to support efforts to manage and reduce potential disturbances from busy shipping lanes.
