New Jersey is bracing for more than 1,000 corporate job losses after Samsung Electronics America and Mars Wrigley announced plans to move their U.S. headquarters out of the state, dealing a significant setback to the local white-collar employment base. On Monday, July 20, 2026, Samsung said it will cut 739 positions at its sprawling Englewood Cliffs headquarters by the end of September 2026 as part of a strategic shift to relocate its primary North American administrative operations to Texas. Samsung already maintains a large operational footprint in Texas, including major semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Austin and Taylor, reinforcing the company’s decision to centralize more of its U.S. operations there. New Jersey, which has long marketed itself as a hub for multinational corporations, also faces job losses from a separate headquarters move by confectionery giant Mars Wrigley, bringing the total number of affected positions across both companies to more than 1,000. Earlier this month, Samsung’s IT services affiliate, Samsung SDS America, disclosed an additional round of layoffs at its Ridgefield Park location, further reducing the conglomerate’s corporate presence in the state. The combined impact of the Samsung and Mars Wrigley departures has intensified concern among state policymakers and economic analysts about New Jersey’s competitiveness in retaining large corporate headquarters amid fierce interstate rivalry for investment and high-paying jobs.
