Iran and Gulf states hit as U.S. strikes escalate

U.S. forces launched a new wave of intensive airstrikes against Iranian military targets early Wednesday, July 16, in a marked escalation of regional hostilities centered on the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command said the 6:00 a.m. ET operation hit Iranian coastal defense systems, cruise missile storage facilities, and launch sites on Greater Tunb Island. Iranian officials reported seven soldiers killed in a separate missile strike on a barracks near Iranshahr and more than 260 people injured in overnight operations. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched drones and missiles toward U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, while Washington widened sanctions on a global procurement network.
