CDC Investigates Massive Cyclospora Outbreak: Taco Bell Removes Menu Items

U.S. federal health authorities are investigating a massive, multi-state outbreak of cyclosporiasis that has sickened nearly 7,000 people nationwide, according to data through mid-July. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are conducting a large traceback operation focused on the produce supply chain, particularly raw fruits and vegetables, to identify the contamination source. Michigan has reported 3,309 confirmed cases, with additional clusters in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, and at least 141 hospitalizations recorded as of July 13. Taco Bell and other major food chains have removed certain menu items while the investigation continues.
