Washington Senate Democrats block $1 trillion defense bill

Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked advancement of a $1 trillion annual defense bill that would significantly increase Pentagon spending and provide a troop pay raise, citing opposition to President Donald Trump’s ongoing war against Iran. The procedural vote on the National Defense Authorization Act failed 50-46, short of the 60 votes needed. All Democrats present opposed the measure. Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer argued the legislation risked becoming a de facto endorsement of a conflict now in its fifth month, following the White House’s formal notice a day earlier that it had resumed bombing strikes against Iran and ended a fragile ceasefire.
