Michigan's Democratic Senate Primary Race to Test Party's Ideological Spectrum

PUBLISHED Jul 13, 2026, 5:07 PM ET

Outgoing Michigan Sen. Gary Peters endorsed Rep. Haley Stevens in the state’s competitive Democratic Senate primary after initially saying he would stay out of the race. Stevens, a House member running as a manufacturing-focused moderate, also counts support from former Michigan senator Debbie Stabenow. She faces Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and running on Medicare for All. Peters called Stevens “battle-tested” who can “hit the ground running.” The primary winner will face Trump-backed Republican Mike Rogers, a former representative, with Michigan a battleground in Democrats’ uphill fight to reclaim the Senate.
