United States reinstates Hormuz blockade, demands tariffs

The United States has reinstated a naval blockade on Iranian ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz and is demanding a 20% reimbursement on all other cargo passing through the waterway, according to a Central Command statement and public remarks by President Donald Trump. The blockade, targeting vessels entering and exiting Iranian ports, is scheduled to begin on July 14 at 4 p.m. New York time. Iran’s Khatam Al-Anbiya military command rejected the move and warned Gulf states against cooperating, calling such actions an act of war. Oil prices spiked, with Brent crude briefly rising 4.7% before stabilizing near $79 a barrel.
