Cybersecurity and incident response company Sygnia has disclosed findings of a complex breach in which a lone, financially motivated hacker used agentic artificial intelligence to compromise a large Amazon Web Services cloud environment in under 72 hours. According to Sygnia’s investigation, released recently, the attacker did not employ zero-day vulnerabilities or novel malware. Instead, they used AI to automate reconnaissance, generate custom tools, orchestrate command sequences, and adapt to the target’s specific configurations. The AI system chained together multiple minor weaknesses across applications, AWS resources, CI/CD pipelines, and data stores, enabling rapid intrusion and successful extortion of a global enterprise.

This breach shows that even big cloud services like AWS can be compromised by AI-driven attacks. It's a reminder to regularly review your online security measures. Make sure your data is backed up and your passwords are strong and unique.
AI is becoming a tool for hackers, not just for tech companies. This incident underscores the need for robust cybersecurity measures across all digital platforms. Worth forwarding if you know someone who relies on cloud services for their business.
