Federal Judge Grants Preliminary Injunction to College Basketball Players Over NCAA Eligibility Rules

An Ohio state judge in Cincinnati has issued a preliminary injunction preventing the NCAA from enforcing its new age-based eligibility rules against 24 college basketball players. In a written ruling on July 9, 2026, Judge Christopher Wagner of the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas found that the regulations were applied to members of the high school class of 2022 in an arbitrary and capricious manner. The court concluded the athletes showed clear and convincing evidence of irreparable harm, including exclusion from practices, rosters and games for the 2026–2027 season. The injunction temporarily restores their eligibility while the underlying lawsuit continues.
