Judge extends Virginia gun-law injunction to entire commonwealth

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. — A Washington County judge on Tuesday issued an opinion extending a preliminary injunction to block enforcement of Virginia’s new assault-weapons and magazine restrictions statewide. Judge Jeffrey L. Campbell clarified in a July 7 three-page letter that the injunction bars all law enforcement agencies and Commonwealth's Attorneys from enforcing the contested provisions across the commonwealth. Campbell amended the injunction’s onset to July 21 to allow courts adequate time to notify agencies, creating a uniform pause and avoiding a patchwork of local enforcement. The pause occurs amid active litigation, including a suit filed by the National Rifle Association, and leaves lawmakers, law enforcement and courts preparing for further briefing and hearings to resolve constitutional challenges.
