Washington’s Chelan Hills wildfire kills one, razes homes

ORONDO, Washington – A fast-moving and deadly wildfire in North Central Washington has killed at least one person, destroyed dozens of homes and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate, authorities said on July 7, 2026. The Chelan Hills Fire has burned more than 9,735 acres in Douglas County, across the Columbia River from the city of Chelan, and was about 20 percent contained as of the latest update from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Southeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team. Douglas County sheriff’s deputies discovered human remains inside a burned vehicle on July 5 after conducting a welfare check and follow-up on a missing person’s report for a local resident who lived in the immediate path of the fire. Sheriff Tyler Caille said the vehicle had slid off a roadway and was then overtaken and consumed by the fast-moving flames. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office, led by Coroner Tanner Bateman, is working to obtain a positive identification of the deceased. Detectives are investigating the circumstances of the death, and the sheriff’s office said crews will continue to search burned areas to ensure no other residents were trapped as the fire swept through the region.
