Seattle-based Amazon advances Alexa+ AI devices strategy

United States – Amazon is accelerating its push into AI-powered consumer hardware under Panos Panay, its hardware and services chief, who outlined the company’s latest plans in a recent episode of The Tech Download. Panay described Alexa+, an upgraded, more contextual version of the Alexa voice assistant that is designed to learn about users’ lives, maintain context and carry out tasks across different devices throughout the day. He said the assistant is intended to let people “just say what you’re thinking” so Alexa can help them get things done, reflecting the impact of recent advances in AI models on Amazon’s long-running voice technology efforts. United States – Panay highlighted how Amazon’s devices business has expanded from the original Echo smart speakers into doorbells and now wearables, following the acquisition of Bee, a startup developing a wristband device that keeps Alexa close at hand. He said Alexa sits at the center of this ecosystem and suggested that consumers may gradually move away from relying on apps and screens as more interactions shift to voice and on-the-go hardware. Panay also disclosed that Amazon is pursuing an end-to-end silicon strategy for some of its most critical consumer devices, designing its own chips to more tightly integrate hardware and software and deliver differentiated Alexa experiences.
