Kolkata lane transforms into World Cup-themed 'FIFA Gully'

In Kolkata, a narrow lane in the Beniatola area has been transformed into “FIFA Gully,” a World Cup-themed street celebrating global football stars. The roughly 100-metre Fakir Chakraborty Lane now features giant cut-outs of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at its entrance, with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr depicted in colourful murals inside. Residents began decorating the lane during the 2014 World Cup using newspaper clippings and have since expanded it into elaborate artwork, all created in their free time without sponsorship. Despite India’s absence from World Cup finals, local supporters strongly follow teams such as Brazil and Argentina.
