United States-based Medtronic has begun formally notifying customers and other affected individuals after confirming that a major data breach linked to the ShinyHunters cyber-extortion group compromised its corporate IT systems earlier this year. The security incident occurred between April 13 and April 19, 2026, when an unauthorized third party infiltrated Medtronic’s corporate environment, prompting the company to launch an investigation after detecting unusual network activity on April 15. Working with external cybersecurity specialists, Medtronic determined that the attackers gained access to personal and confidential information belonging to a large number of individuals. United States regulators received sample notification filings indicating that the compromised data varies by person but may include full names, contact details, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and health-related information. Shortly after the intrusion, the ShinyHunters group publicly claimed responsibility for the attack and, on April 18, 2026, listed Medtronic on its dark web extortion portal, asserting that it had exfiltrated more than 9 million records containing personally identifiable information and internal corporate data. The hackers demanded a ransom payment by April 21, 2026 and threatened to release the stolen database, and although the Medtronic listing was later removed from the site, the company has continued with its formal notification process.
