Poinsett County inmates relocated after Arkansas jail outage

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Authorities in Poinsett County, Arkansas, are transferring detainees from the county detention center to other facilities after a power outage led to elevated temperatures inside parts of the jail, Sheriff Kevin Molder said Friday. The outage began Wednesday when a junction box overheated, interrupting normal electrical service to the detention center. Molder said a backup generator activated as designed and backup cooling units were put into use to help regulate indoor conditions. Despite those contingency measures, extreme outdoor heat caused some housing areas to become warmer than normal, prompting additional precautions by jail staff. Molder said detention center employees began conducting temperature and welfare checks in the affected areas roughly every 45 minutes to make sure detainees did not face dangerous conditions. Out of what he described as an abundance of caution, the sheriff ordered detainees to be moved to other detention centers starting Thursday afternoon, and the transport process continued into Friday morning. According to Molder, no detainees were in immediate danger of overheating and there were no reports of heat-related medical emergencies, but monitoring of the jail population continued. Crews are working to repair the electrical problem, and Molder said he expected full power to be restored by late Friday afternoon.
