Spielberg’s Russell takes Austrian Grand Prix pole

SPIELBERG, Austria, June 27 (Reuters) - George Russell secured pole position for Mercedes in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix at Spielberg on Saturday, clocking a lap 0.236 seconds faster than Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc as the session ended in chaos. Lewis Hamilton, Leclerc’s teammate at Ferrari and winner of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix two weeks ago, qualified third to continue the team’s strong recent form. Russell briefly came under investigation for a possible double-yellow flag infringement after Max Verstappen crashed on his final flying lap, but stewards later dropped the case after reviewing the circumstances. Russell said he had seen a single yellow flag and lifted into the corner, as Mercedes extended its streak of securing pole position to eight consecutive races. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth for Sunday’s race after aborting his final lap when Verstappen went off, later admitting he mistakenly treated the situation as a double-yellow flag and took full responsibility for the decision. The 19-year-old Italian, who has won five of the seven races so far, leads Hamilton by 41 points in the standings. Four-time champion Verstappen, who nearly dropped out in the second qualifying segment when Pierre Gasly came within 0.460 seconds of eliminating him, slid across the gravel at turn nine and hit the wall on his last run but walked away apparently unhurt. Despite the crash, an earlier lap was enough to secure Verstappen fifth place on the grid, and he said he believed a third-place start had been possible with a clean final attempt.
