INGLEWOOD, California – Canada earned its first-ever World Cup knockout stage victory with a 1-0 win over South Africa in the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium. The single-elimination match, played on Sunday as the tournament’s only fixture that day, put the global spotlight on two nations making their debut in the World Cup knockout rounds after both advanced from the group stage with identical 1-1-1 records. The first half unfolded cautiously, with cagey play from both sides as they tried to limit mistakes while probing for space in attack. South Africa, known as Bafana Bafana, pieced together several eye-catching moves going forward but repeatedly struggled to deliver a decisive final ball into the penalty area. Canada nearly broke the deadlock just before halftime when defender Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the goal line by South Africa’s Aubrey Modiba, and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams immediately blocked Tajon Buchanan’s close-range follow-up. After the interval, Canada resumed control, with forward Tani Oluwaseyi drawing another strong save from Williams before Mbekezeli Mbokazi cleared the danger. In the 75th minute, head coach Jesse Marsch introduced captain Alphonso Davies, who had been recovering from a hamstring injury and quickly put pressure on the South African back line. The breakthrough finally came in stoppage time, when midfielder Stephen Eustáquio scored in the 92nd minute, sealing a dramatic win and sending Canada into the Round of 16 while ending South Africa’s tournament run.
