United States university cuts 110 jobs amid funding drop

Johns Hopkins University is eliminating about 110 positions across several schools and central administrative units as it confronts a sharp and ongoing decline in federal research funding. The layoffs, focused on administrative and support roles rather than core faculty or research posts, affect the Carey Business School, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and central administration. University officials confirmed the cuts after they were first reported by The Baltimore Banner. Johns Hopkins, historically the top recipient of federal research dollars since 1979, has seen its multi-year federal research portfolio fall by more than $500 million in 2025, according to a February 2026 letter from President Ron Daniels.
