The United States and Iran have carried out direct military strikes against each other over the past 48 hours in the Persian Gulf region, raising fears for a fragile ceasefire agreed in June 2026. The confrontation began Thursday when an Iranian drone attacked the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely as it transited the Strait of Hormuz along an alternative route recently cleared of naval mines by US forces and a UN maritime agency. In response, US forces struck Iranian coastal military infrastructure, prompting retaliatory Iranian drone attacks on US installations. The International Maritime Organization has suspended a major vessel evacuation operation until security can be assured.
