United States braces for intensifying holiday heatwave

A large swath of the central and eastern United States is forecast to experience a dangerous and potentially life-threatening heat wave beginning Sunday, June 28, 2026, and lasting through the July 4 Independence Day weekend. A strong high-pressure “heat dome” is expected to push daytime temperatures into the 90s and low 100s Fahrenheit, with heat index values widely between 100°F and 110°F and locally up to 115°F. The National Weather Service has issued Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Watches, with alerts already in place for Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota, and warns of unusually warm overnight lows worsening health risks.
