Miami wildfire threatens ICE detention facility, worsens air

A fast-moving brush fire in Miami-Dade County, known as the Corrections Fire, has burned about 330 acres and is only 15% contained, prompting health and environmental concerns in South Florida. The blaze, which began over the weekend of June 20–21, 2026, is burning near the Everglades Correctional Institution, an immigration detention facility nicknamed "Alligator Alcatraz." Federal officials with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed that all detainees had been transferred to other regional facilities before the fire began, as part of preparations for the Atlantic hurricane season. Nearby, the larger Quarry 2 and Well fires are mostly contained but remain under monitoring.
